How to make an Obsidian Generator using Redstone
Ever find yourself in need of obsidian but don't want to go spelunking to find it? or don't want to keep making trips to lava pools or the nether for buckets of lava? Often look in your chests and find stacks of redstone and not know what to do with it? This tutorial will show you how you can use that pesky redstone to make valuable obsidian blocks!

    What you will need:
    • One bucket of water
    • One bucket of lava
    • Redstone(one piece of dust makes one obsidian block)
    • Stone/cobble(this is to make the structure, I use stone in the pictures)
    • Door
    • 5 slabs(any slabs will do, just to make things easier)
    • Glass(I prefer this, can use stone/cobble as well for this)
    • Gravel/sand/dirt(optional)
    Step 1:
You will need to make a 4x9x5 "shelter" as seen in the picture. This will be the area used for the generator
    [IMG]

    Step 2:
Inside the structure, dig out the middle row 1 block down, also raise the back row by 1 block(I use stone here but you can use dirt/anything, you will be getting rid of it later)

    Step 3:
Place a row of stone(of whatever material you used) 2 rows above the trench as shown in the picture
    [IMG]

    Step 4:
Place water source on the center block of the back row
    [IMG]

    Step 5:
Dig out row underneath water(the row that you added in Step 2), Water should now flow into trench as shown in the picture
    [IMG]

    Step 6:
You will need to make a wall in front of the 7 block row that it in front of the water. I use glass so I can see the obsidian being made. Place a door at either end. Place a block surrounded by slabs in the very middle(this will make placing the lava easier for you)

    Step 7:
Place redstone along the 7 block row that is between the glass and water.

    Step 8:
This is the most important step. After placing redstone down leave and close the door. Stand on the block next to the glass. Place the lava source on the side facing you of the middle block on the row above the water(as shown in picture). Wait for lava to reach the end. PICK UP LAVA SOURCE. That is very important so you will only need one lava bucket as opposed to multiple ones. Wait for lava to disperse(sometimes it takes awhile for the lava to go away, this is where the optional dirt/gravel/sand comes into play, just place it where lava still is but make sure you got the source back first)

    Step 9:
After lava is gone, open door and mine the obsidian(with diamond pickaxe obviously). Repeat steps 7-9 to make more.

And there you have it, making precious obsidian with only redstone and one bucket of lava. I hope this tutorial is beneficial to everyone. If you have any questions or comments feel free to reply, /msg me in game, or send me a message on here. Thanks for checking this out and happy obsidian generating!

As cool as this glitch is, I'm unsure we need it permeating the landscape :(

Throttie, i think it would be best since the purpose is to help new users while if you do something that the staff wont allow, it wont be helping.

I asked Dzy, at first to see if I could use it, he said he used it. So I know he had one, and I have one. Always thought it was alowed. Never even thought it wouldn't after I've seen so many. o_O

yeah, obby generators have been common for a long long time hehe. Its one great way to make something useful out of the mass amount of redstone that piles up ;)

Turning redstone into obsidian is a glitch, and like Phsyconinja said, Mojang knows about it, but they dont care about those kind of glitches. It isnt supposed to be like that, Mojang is just too lazy. (Surprise.... Surprise...)

Well they did a similar thing with pig spawners. Remember, not too long ago, when all spawners in SMP were pig spawners? That was a glitch for sure, but Jeb said he didnt think it mattered too much and that they wouldnt change it. Well he got so much flak for that from people saying it may not matter to you, but it matters to us actual players, and then he changed it. Of course, not many would give Jeb flak for this glitch, but I think of it as a very similar situation. Just my opinion, I think you could also see it like that if you wanted to.
