Or should I change the name? ;] This thread may technically not be allowed to be under the town section, as it is technically not a town just yet. However, I figured this is more of a fitting place than the build project section because even if this never is regioned as such, it will still be a town. I have been building this place for quite awhile, seeing as how I have regular picks and it requires a large surface area under the ground (hence dwarven city), still, since the sky limit update, I couln't help but use the new area above the ground and have updated the style of the city to include vast towers and the likes. So pretty much, I wanted to post something about this "city" here to either get backing, ideas, positive or negative feedback and the likes. I have taken a great deal of time looking at dwarven construct concept art to base my ideas for the construction of this city, and what I have now is the basis for the relative look and feel of the place. I want this place to pretty much be on of the more awe-inspiring and detail-oriented locations on the server, and I place a good deal on keeping within certain criteria for any building that may go on if this is opened to public/residents. I hope to be posting some videos including Gil'girn on my channel soon, so i will post those here if they apply. In any case, I do not have the full funding in order to make this a town or a city yet, and currently it only encompasses two of my 75x75 regions, plus a lil extra. However, this happens to be a vast amount of area when a city is located underground, and has the possibility of expanding upwards 100%. In any case, please post any ideas you might have, if you would be interested in either being a part in helping design/build this, or if you would be interested in actually taking up residence in this town (Hopefully city). If I get enough positive feedback, I will create a rough sketch of what the rules concerning building codes and whatever other town rules there may be. I haven't checked to see if there are still limitations on road size, etc., but I will check so see if there could be exceptions in a more abstract idea such as this. If it really came down to it, I could leave it as is, and add people to the region, as long as certain standards and rules are met within that community. To give you idea of what type of things this city would include~ -intricate and clever redstone circuitry for operation of automatic doors, lighting, and the likes -skillful stone-masonry when building, and blocks that compliment the overall style -large tower in center of city for communal rooms and public uses -construction of a grand library with a wealth of knowledge, lore, and *other* writings -a landscape that will eventually form into an intricate and planned nature scene with machinery -underground dwellings interconnected so the community can interact in rooms that vary int heme from fiery lava furnaces, to crystalline glowing caverns. [Hopefully I can edit this post to place media in later. If not, ignore this little tid-bit.]
Sounds awesome, a project like that must take an awful long time, I'd be interested in helping/ living there once it's done and I'm finished with my town, would be in summer holidays however as school is priority. Just a suggestion- Gil'Girin sounds cooler or ron or run. But your choice. -Smartim
Looks awesome :3 But btw "gurning" is an activity that involves the contorting of one's face in order to produce deformed/demented/disturbing expressions. Just a heads up.
I made a little video on my minecraft channel to give an idea of dimension and design. As you can see, a lot has been done, but so much more could still be achieved. Plus, it's located right across the lake from Mgn's property and impressive looking Sequel to Monaco (as in, a very large castle construct that looks something medieval and awesome.) http://www.youtube.com/my_videos?feature=mhee
Yes, I do remember haha. You're still on the "people who helped" sign I keep there to remind to thanks later lol, perhaps it will go into some kind of hall of fame lol.
All right, so here is a little update. I just about have the funds to make this place a town, but I will need to work on the town specification requirements in order for it to be regioned. On the big list of things to do, number two, I will also be working on the Town Rules Section, firstly by writing up rough drafts and brainstorming ideas that would be useful/necessary/helpful/epic to implement into the town. Here are a few ideas I have come up with so far, but keep in mind these are all just that still, ideas. -Perhaps incorporate the use of the tower-city idea with plots being regioned in various sizes of circles (yes I know they will be squares, but really the whole "city" has been designed off of this idea so far) that will be encouraged to be dug down to level 20 and I can then connect to one of the main branches of the town. -Since normal server rules supersede any other rules, of course rules such as "No Stealing" "No Griefing" etc will be put in place. -Certain building styles will be banned as I strictly want to adhere to the specific look of Gil'girn. However, I most definitely want to encourage individual styles as well, so think of it as an art project...the teacher tells you the parameters of the assignment and the grading scale, but every piece still comes back unique to the sculptor, or in this case, builder. -There will be only one nether portal in an undisclosed location as of now, because recently I hate them. That is about all for now. Also, I will be accepting any donation of time/munnies to help with the massive deficit this will require xD, post here if you support or if you have any comments/suggestions please! And Have a Lovely Day. I'm going to work now. Wish me luck. http://www.youtube.com/my_videos?feature=mhee
Update #2 -Finished building the 4+ high walls with helping hands. These walls are doubled, and have an inner 2-wide walkway and an outer 2-wide walkway along the top. Am uncertain what sort of design might be implemented on top of the length of the wall just yet; for now it is just relatively flat. -Eventually the town wall will be equipped with four medium sized towers, all of them being connected at their base below the ground to the center Gil'girn tower. The wall also has a bridge with iron gateways, and may eventually have corner outposts, with option of selling corner post plots to players. -Have been digging tunnels like crazy in order to branch out from the center of the region to the outer towers so that eventually the entire wall will be added to the ever growing complex network of Gil'girn. -Have added the first three plots to the northern line stretching out towards the wall, these will require the owners to connect their plot at one or both of the tunnels at around level 45 and level 20 in order to connect into Gil'girn. Because of this, it may be a building rule that you must put the work in to clear your plot down to these tunnels before upward expansion, or perhaps just have some system of getting through your tower-plot from the tunnels to the surface before you can build above ground. -Connected two balconies on the steep back of the mountain with stairs, successfully connecting the inner core of Gil'girn to the upper-inner core. -Debating what to do about the massive entrance in the mountain-face, as I do not approve of the look the stairs give by going down under the water. It looks cut and not natural enough for my liking, debating covering it up and implementing some sort of water bridges that additional plots may be able to connect to. -Funds have remained the same due to losses as a casino owner, still needing around 600g to region the whole thing. -Still working on a comprehensive town rules set, and debating where the best place to post them would be. -Debating where to put the main town portal as to give the best feel of the town upon arrival, and hopefully add some shock and awe factor, while still providing great accesibilty and acces to the town. In any case, that's about all for now. Thanks to everyone who has been supportive of this project/idea/town/region/thingy. It has been fun to make and I hope it will be even more fun when it is closer to finished (I can't ever really say finished, because improvements can Always be made.) That's all for now, folks. -PoorPeter
Update #3 -Donation cap has been maxed, but more donations of materials/gold will still be accepted in order to further magnify the epictasticness of the town. As I was telling some one earlier "I think of it as the shell and structure of what will become so much more epic as time moves on". Or something like that. -In essence, I want this town to cater to a kind of more adventurous mood. I want everything to look and feel "Dwarven" and Rpg-style-ish. I want to populate it with players who are willing to be in good spirits about contributing to the town's look and feel as a whole. I also would like the town-base to have the dwarven diggy-diggy-hole mindset about their plots and renovations that will be overseen in the town. There is a lot of digging to be done, and dagrabbit we are living in a dwarven town, we had better start BEING a dwarven town! In essence, this means that plots will require you to DIG and design in a round-shaped fashion. Thsi town WILL NOT be like others on the server where everything has been flattened out and made nice and pretty for you. We will live in the town to survive, and if we want the natural forces to bend to our will, we must do so with an iron fist. In the same manner, the natural forces must be preserved to compliment our structures, and vice versa, we must build to compliment the landscape and biomes we happen to live in. In the end, everything must be well-thought out, and structures will hopefully have time and effort put into them, with no end to the amount of time and effort that may still be added. -I have been playing with the idea of splitting the region into four distinct sections. Each one will have a seperate mood and design set to go with it. For example, one of the four sections could be themed the "industrial" section, with more redstone devices, buildings designed to house large furnaces, anvils, crafting areas, etc, with more industrial looking buildings. Vice versa, the opposite and opposing section could be themed "pure-nature" and will have plots focused on being modest, or epic, but still focusing on the greener aspect of building with lots of thought put into scenery and pretty design. Aesthetically pleasing would be another way to put it. -For future thought, I am hopefully going to be able to start work on a series based in Gil'girn which residents and possible outsider's may be able to participate in. More on this later. -I have been toying with the idea of selling connectable plots. Instead of users having to buy plots next to each other, and then ask if they can connect them, I would be selling plots in clusters that can all be connected via tunnels/bridges/walkways. I think this helps with diversity of buildings and would provide the opportunity for those multiple-plot-users-connectors to have at it. -Along with the idea of sectioning the region into themed areas, I could also implement the hierarchy that I mentioned in a previous post. Since the "center" of Gil'girn is not *actually* the center, it cuts the region into four different-sized rectangles. The idea being that the smallest rectangle would be the most exclusive and expensive, but also the most prestiged. The only other variation from this theme would be that the closer you get to the center mountain, the bigger the plots will be and the more prestige and expensive plots could lie there. Beyond that, however, I still also like the idea of having plots connected to the wall, and these could also be more expensive. So, I have some work to do to get a comprehensive plot model going for the town. -Hopefully I will get the rules board up tonight, and essentially I can then purchase the region to make it an official town! Any comments/suggestions/ideas that you would like to share? Or just want to show your support? Please comment on the thread That's it fer' now. -
Update #4 Wow. I can't believe I'm doing this, but I am. I had Mraedis come over and look at some of the plots to see if he wanted to buy one, but mostly to see what a person's reaction would be to the town in general. The reactions wasn't entirely positive, and unfortunately, I had to face some of the fears that I had myself. Many of the largest plots would fit into a 15 x 15 area. This isn't very big, and certainly wouldn't be able to accommodate the type of building us dwarves like to accomplish. There was one main reason the plots were the way the were, however, and this was for the type of overall design I was trying to pull off. Unlike most other towns, where buildings vary in height to large degrees, our buildings have a height cap. The cap is not to discourage building tall buildings, most of the caps are still very very tall, not to mention all the underground work that needs to be done before they can be built upon anyways. The thing is, it would be odd to have residents of the city buying and building buildings that are larger and taller than what is supposed to be the center of Gil'girn. So each plot was sized according to its relation distance-wise to the capitol building. So here is what I decided. Build it bigger. I'm a dwarf-minded individual, right? So that's what I am going to do. Build a new capitol building that literally "dwarf's" the current capitol. I mean, it will completely swallow the whole thing, which is actually going to be kind of cool if I can pull it off. The old building will becoming the very center core of the new one, with walkways and passages connecting throughout and *inside* of the entire new building. Hopefully, it will be massive enough to make those plots the correct size. And now, because I feel like it, I'm going to go to paint and do some quick "sketch"/ "concept" art for you to post so you can get an idea of what I hope to envision for the future of Gil'girn. Enjoy (and comment. Please) To briefly explain this mass of color blobs, The orange buildings are the current Gil'girn center and secondary towers. The green is the rough shape of the mountain. The box around the edges and the cross-shape cutting into into four sections are the outlying town wall and the four main tunnels to Gil'girn, respectively. The Black circle around the center will be the new capitol building, effectively swallowing up the original and its secondary tower. The red towers are hopefully going to be representing the four themes of Gil'girn, but I think I have them in the wrong place, and the blue blobs are examples of where plots might be, the ones with two bulges being connected plots. Any questions? Contact me in-game via /mail or leave a comment here. Thanks!
If anyone would like to help me dig a few tunnels/coat over existing tunnels in stone brick, pls leave me a comment here, or message/mail me ingame ^-^
Ok. So I decided to update the design of the center towers. Since I actually did make the new tower so large, as it encompasses the entire center tower and parts of the mountain, I decided that the ratio between width and height would not allow for a tower to be constructed that looks correctly proportioned. So, on a whim, I decided to convert the preexisting (yellow) tower into the tower that represents the light side of Gil'girn. I made a whole new (black) tower which will represent the dark side of Gil'girn, and the remaining two (grey) towers are yet to be determined which will represent the mechanical side, and which will represent the nature side. The (red) tower is just there for the moment, but it will have some use associated with it in the future. If you were wondering, those oddly askewed, but hopefully somewhat straight-looking black lines will be the connections between the center and the outer towers, hopefully in the form of ornate bridges. Perhaps. That is all for now. Adieu.
